“The up-and-coming Calder String Quartet, quite possibly the finest—and certainly the most adventurous—American chamber group” (Alan Rich, Bloomberg News ) makes its LACMA debut in a concert celebrating the work of Viennese artist and sculptor Franz West.
The concert includes music by Austrian composers Anton Webern and Beat Furrer, including the U.S premiere of Furrer’s 1st String Quartet, along with Christopher Rouse’s String Quartet #1 and Ryan Carter’s Grip.
CALDER QUARTET? The name is inspired by American artist Alexander Calder — the one famous for his mobiles. The quartet comprises BENJAMIN JACOBSON (violin), ANDREW BULBROOK (violin), JONATHAN MOERSCHEL (viola) and ERIC BYERS (cello). They are the quartet-in-residence at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles.
“In an astonishingly short time, the Calder Quartet has become the American string quartet to watch.”
—Mark Swed, L.A. Times.
